The stars came together
every night
over the Joshua trees
to mock the minuscule dots
sheltering themselves
around fires as they had done
for billions of years.
They still peered,
the whites of their eyes
stretching and squinting
alternately,
trying to make out
infinite wisdom hiding in the dark,
no less amazed than their first day on earth.
If only there was a vine with leaves as footholds to climb up to the very sun and dim it's light a little bit, would things in our universe be any different?
